I recently spent time in a new country that was not my own. I was introduced to a culture that was completely foreign to my senses and my body. This experience was not exactly what I had wanted, but I did a lot of things I had never done before. That included having a conversation about a topic that I had just never considered before and was completely unfamiliar to me. My thoughts went from being a general question to a full-blown exam question.
I decided to use the “challenges immigrants face” essay as an opportunity to address the topic of immigration. The essay is written by a professor at a very good university who was very good at first. In the essay, he describes how people of different cultures adapt to their new environment. He talks about how a person of one culture might not notice a different one because of the way he or she is used, or the way their body is used.
And it’s not just the way people are used. It’s how people are treated too. He talks about how he is used to the way Americans are used to, and how the Mexican is used to being treated fairly, but how he doesn’t think the Mexican is used well. This is where the essay is most apt to be useful. Immigration is very similar to cultural adaptation.
This is essentially a “what if” question.
An immigrant might not be aware of his own cultural differences because of how he is treated. On the one hand, he might choose to ignore them. On the other, he might be forced to live in a less traditional culture because his country of origin chooses to be treated in a certain way. This essay is a good way to help immigrants see their own culture from a different perspective.
In this essay, I’m going to challenge the assumption that immigrants should not be treated well. I am going to argue that we should treat people well who need it and do whatever we can to help them, but that we shouldn’t ignore those who are different.
Let me tell you something about this essay that you might not have heard before. I’ve been on many ‘immigrant-friendly’ teams before. I have to say that I felt as though I was the only one who didn’t understand the concept of “we treat people well who need it” and “do whatever we can to help them,” and that I just thought that immigrants needed to be treated as people, not as a separate class.
I’m sure you saw the comments in yesterday’s article from someone who said they were offended and offended people were offended when they read this because it seemed that we were using immigrants as a separate class. I have to say that I felt the exact same way. I know a lot of people on our team who did not like immigrants because they do not always follow what we tell them to do, and so I know that we need to treat immigrants with compassion and respect.
Our mission in life is to help people with disabilities flourish. One of the biggest issues facing immigrants is that we need help with the basics: English, computer literacy, health and safety, and transportation. All these things are more important to immigrants than they are to Americans. If you are going to become a citizen, you have to be able to use a computer, you have to be able to pay your taxes, and you have to know how to use your medications and your health insurance.
So what kind of immigrants are going to do these things? Are they going to be the kind that will do those things and be the kind that will hire a public defender? Or are they going to be the kind that will not take a basic English test, or will take a test that is easy to fake, or will not pay their taxes? Those are the types of immigrants that our community is going to be most concerned about.
