I have to say that this article is not about me. It’s just about a company called Benchmark that I’ve recently started a monthly column for. They have been the subject of my articles for a few years now, and I’m happy to see that they are finally starting to turn a profit.
The company is named after a test program to determine how well you can build a system on an individual’s hardware. The company recently acquired a new one, now called Benchmark, that is able to run on any PC and run a variety of benchmarks. The idea is that the company will eventually be able to produce a PC that runs benchmarks on its own, with no need to buy a PC. The benchmark on my keyboard is a game called DOTA2.
I had my hands raised when I heard about this. For two years I’ve been waiting for benchmarks on my laptop to run on my desktop. I’ve been waiting for the “I’m a gamer” factor to kick in, and now the “I’m a gamer without having to own a PC” factor is going to kick in. I am excited.
Unfortunately, this is not going to happen. Even if they are willing to write a new benchmark, they wont be able to implement it in a way that is both reliable and convenient enough to be used by the average user. A lot of benchmarks are written for gaming but not for general computing, and that is the problem. The benchmarks for a general purpose PC are written for gaming PCs and do not take advantage of the Intel Core i5 processor and the GPU’s.
The problem is that most of the benchmarks are written for gaming PCs and the processor. Even if you have an Intel Core i7 processor and a Radeon HD 3850 graphics card, you still have a lot of steps to jump through to get your benchmark results.
There are a number of tools out there that can do this for you. I have found that the best solution is to use the free and open-source benchmarking tools that are available and then use a tool that can handle your specific system. If you’re going to be using benchmarks for general computing, you’re going to have to be a bit more creative with how you measure performance.
The biggest problem for benchmarking is not how you measure performance, but how you measure your own performance. If you can’t get the best user experience for your application, then look at how you measure your application’s overall performance. I think it’s pretty standard for benchmarking, but I’ve spent many hours on it, so I don’t know if it’s accurate.
