This is a word that I am hearing more and more at work. Just today a co-worker called me “another word for caregiver” and I felt the need to respond with this. I use my caregiving role as a form of self-awareness and self-care. I make sure to take care of my own needs and wants.
By making sure to take care of my own needs and wants, I am also taking care of the needs, wants, and desires of all the people who care for me. I am not just “giving care.” I am also taking care of myself.
Caregiving is a way of being. It’s the act of giving to others, and it is an extension of that act, one that extends beyond the immediate situation and becomes a way of loving yourself, your family, and the world in general.
