The thyroid is a gland located on the top of our neck that controls our body’s metabolism. Because of this, proper thyroid function is essential for a healthy body.
Since thyroid dysfunction is associated with a number of health problems, including thyroid cancer, it is not just a thyroid problem. Even though thyroidectomy is a common treatment for thyroid conditions, many people who undergo thyroidectomy develop fatigue afterward. This is normal, though. I just mean that thyroidectomy is not a cure. It’s a temporary treatment for people with thyroid cancer, that eventually goes into remission.
I’m thinking the fatigue stems from the surgery itself. In general, the recovery period after thyroidectomy is very long and can last for up to a year, and the recovery can be quite slow. However, some people experience a prolonged period of fatigue after surgery. After the recovery period is over and the thyroid is functioning normally, most people feel much improved.
I can’t say that there are any studies that show how long or even if a thyroidectomy recovery period is. However, I have seen other people’s Facebook posts describing their thyroid recovery period.
During this recovery period, it’s often hard to sleep well or concentrate on anything. I know that some people feel like they need to do more physical activity after thyroid surgery. However, I’m not sure if this is a normal recovery period or if it is a sign of fatigue.
Yes, thyroidectomy recovery is a difficult time. The recovery period is the amount of time between the surgery and the first post-op appointment. During this time many people start feeling ill, have trouble sleeping, and have to take frequent breaks from work. If you do have to take frequent breaks, I would think its better to take a period of rest from work than a period of activity.
I personally don’t think this will be a sign of fatigue. I’ve had my thyroid removed and I’ve never felt like this. In fact, I think that this is a normal part of the post-op recovery process. It’s common after surgery for some people to feel like they’ve been running on empty for a while.
I had a thyroidectomy more than 8 years ago, so I can relate. Unfortunately, that is not a universal feeling, and it’s not just the thyroid. I had a few other operations as well, but I’m sure there are others out there who have had the same issues after surgery.
Fatigue is a common symptom of thyroid cancer, but there can be a lot of other causes. Some patients may feel tired for a couple of days after the surgery, and in the days following it, they may feel too tired to do much other than watch TV. It can be hard to find a doctor who can diagnose thyroid cancer, so if you have the symptoms, it’s important to be sure you have a good doctor and that he or she can determine the cause.
Luckily, it seems that the thyroid cancer patients I have seen have had no problems with thyroidectomy recovery fatigue.
