This was probably the most stressful day of my life. The gallery told me that they don’t like art selling online because people usually expect to be in front of the customer and “be a salesperson.” The gallery manager basically said that I’m “the person who will go to an online auction and say, ‘I want to buy this painting.
Its always stressful to say the least, especially if you just got a painting to sell. If that painting was a work of art then it should have been a show-stopping one. Also, the gallery manager told me that they had received a lot of emails from people who wanted to buy the painting, but they simply did not have the money to buy it.
The gallery manager said that the reason they do not receive the money from the online sales is because it costs them something to pay someone to get the painting to the gallery. If it cost them nothing to send someone to the auction and they were to have to pay the painting, then they would have to have the money to pay for the painting.
Although this seems like a reasonable argument, it also makes the situation even worse. Gallery managers who are selling paintings are not in the business of selling paintings themselves. They are selling their time. They are selling their expertise. If they want to sell the painting they have a job to do for their customers and if they want to pay someone to get it to them, then they are going to have to pay someone to get it to them.
It’s also worth noting that there are plenty of jobs for art buyers and salespeople. For instance, a gallery manager could get a commission for selling the painting and could be paid by the gallery. So if the gallery wants the painting, it would pay the gallery to get it to them, and the gallery would pay the painting to the salesperson. But it is still a business, and it is still a job.
The reality is that people are going to be paying for ladders to get to their work, and for a person to get the painting to them. So you have to offer a service that people want. In my local coffee shop, we have a guy waiting patiently behind the counter who is also waiting for the customer to come over, so he could take the coffee order right there at the counter.
You can look at that as a win-win arrangement. You have to provide your services, and the customer has to pay for it. But also, you can take a different angle on the question. What are you actually looking for? Are you expecting to get something that you can’t get any other way? If so, you have to make it clear to potential customers that you will get what they are paying for.
A customer is not expecting to get something they cant get any other way.
