I find myself using the word “bulimia” to describe a lot of my clients. It is a word I find myself using more often than the word “bipolar.” I have noticed that, if I use the word “bulimia” more often, I find myself using it more often.
Bulimia, or binge eating, is a condition that can be defined as a binge of food eaten in a period of time. A binge of food may be a few days, a week, a month, or even longer. Bulimia is not a disease but instead a psychological disorder that affects how we eat. Eating disorders are commonly referred to as eating disorders, binge eating disorders, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.
If you’ve read any of my articles or watched any of my talks or interviews with the team, I’m sure you’ve seen me speak about bulimia. Usually, I speak about bulimia, but not always, because it’s not as common as it should be. I’ve had a lot of people tell me I’m “stuck in a loop” with bulimia.
I was diagnosed with bulimia at age 19. At the time I was a very athletic, single, college-educated girl on the verge of a career in medicine. I was bulimic because I just couldn’t manage to stop eating. I knew I had to do something about it. So, I did the most logical, well-thought-out thing I could, and committed to a very strict diet.
It turned out to be very successful, but even I cant figure out how. Ive lost about 80lbs in the last 4 years, and Ive lost it all again. I can count on one hand the number of times Ive had a couple of huge, uncontrollable cravings, or just been so tired I cant think straight. But, Ive seen my weight come back, and Ive found that the most enjoyable time is when I am on a diet.
Bulimia isn’t just about dieting and restricting yourself. It’s about food restriction, so the person with bulimia tends to starve themselves, binge, and then purge. Bulimia is a psychological disorder that causes the person to binge eat and purge. It can be chronic, but sometimes it’s acute.
The reason bulimia is so common is because it comes with the same problems that alcohol and drugs do. They both affect the body in a variety of ways, and both cause extreme levels of stress. The same is true for bulimia.
Although bulimia has been around for quite a while, you’d think it would be more common now that it’s been popularized. In terms of actual numbers, the only time bulimia has been on the rise is in the past couple of years. Most of the recent statistics, however, are for women. That’s because, in many cases, it’s a sign that an individual is having trouble coping with life and is trying to “manage” their symptoms.
There is a strong tendency to blame women, though its not as bad as it used to be. In fact, there is some evidence that the rise in bulimia may be a result of women being more open and accepting, and therefore able to talk about their issues and ask for help.
It is also true that men are more open and accepting of their problems, but its usually due to the fact that they’ve had a hard life and are less afraid to voice their issues. I know both men and women who are bulimic, and they both suffer from similar symptoms.
