In a study conducted in the US, it was found that women with sickle cell anaemia (SLA) have a higher risk for miscarriage and pre-eclampsia. Although this may not apply to all women with SLA, the study’s findings do point to a higher risk for these conditions in women with SLA.
The sickle cell anaemia gene is a recessive gene that produces a protein that’s normally found in the cells of red blood cells, but causes the abnormal production of these cells when it’s inherited. It’s estimated that about 10% of American mothers will have SLA. The disease is thought to run in families, so there are a lot of people with the gene.
SLA is thought to be caused by the mutation on the sickle cell gene, but its symptoms are not fully understood, so its not clear if it is just one or both, or what is causing the symptoms. It is thought that the sickle cell anaemia protein is responsible for the abnormal production of red blood cells in pregnant women as well as the production of other proteins in the fetus. This may explain why SLA is more common in certain populations like the Hispanic population of the US.
Sickle cell anaemia affects blood cells during pregnancy, but the symptoms are not usually severe. It is also thought that SLA can be passed down to the embryos during the first 20 weeks of conception. It is thought that SLA is passed in a “silent” way from mother to fetus, meaning that the father does not know he carried the SLA gene. SLA is thought to be passed down to about 1 in every 6000 to 1 in every 50,000 pregnancies.
SLA is a very rare disease that affects about one in every 50,000 pregnancies. It is thought to be caused by the same gene that causes sickle cell anaemia, but it is not thought that this gene is passed on silently in the womb. This makes it very hard to study. The only way to find out if SLA is passed to the baby is to test for it in the mother.
It’s not totally clear how much SLA affects the baby. The evidence suggests that a baby with SLA doesn’t usually survive past the first month of life. That is, SLA does not affect the baby in any way, shape, or form, until it is about 1 to 2 years old.
SLA testing is costly and is generally not covered by insurance, so it is difficult to study SLA. However, there are a few studies that have found a correlation between SLA and a higher risk of miscarriage. One study showed that women who tested positive for SLA had a significantly higher risk of miscarriage. A second study found a significant link between SLA and an increased risk of stillbirth.
As for the specific question of pregnancy, the best advice on how to prevent miscarriage comes from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who say that miscarriage is a very rare occurrence in women who are pregnant. However, if you have a history of miscarriage, you are more likely to get miscarriage. For example, if your last miscarriage was three to six months ago, you may be at higher risk for miscarriage than if your last miscarriage was the last five years ago.
So here’s how to avoid miscarriage: get your OB/GYN to check you for a history of miscarriage, but also take it slow and not give up and have no more miscarriages in the future. If you have a history of miscarriages, your OB/GYN may recommend you have your first child very early, as early pregnancies are at high risk for miscarriage.
Even if you have no history of miscarriage, there are a number of things that you can do to improve your odds for a successful pregnancy, including continuing to exercise your heart and keep up your prenatal vitamins. Of course, if you have a history of miscarriage, you may be advised to take these precautions even if they don’t include taking prenatal vitamins.
