That is exactly what happened for me after I had a traumatic relationship breakup. After all my trauma was what was keeping me stuck in that relationship and made me feel like a victim. I had learned that I could do things that were not my own, so I started making excuses for myself and decided that I would go to sleep every night feeling traumatized. I didn’t realize that this was the exact response that I wanted to hear.

One of the things that I’ve learned in my therapy work is that it’s absolutely not good to give yourself a “trauma” excuse to avoid making something uncomfortable. So, instead of feeling traumatized every night, I began to find the things that made me uncomfortable and chose to either learn to love myself again or not. I guess that’s what being transgender is all about… it’s about learning not to be a victim.

Not only that, but if what we put our bodies through everyday is traumatic, then what do we do with our bodies once we’re back home? Do you really want to keep living with that PTSD? I mean that’s what people do in the movies, right? So, if you’re struggling with the idea that you must be constantly worried about your mental health, then what do you do? Do you get a second job! Or you buy some new shoes.

One of the most prevalent symptoms of trauma is anxiety. We often look for a way to get rid of it, or we turn to a pill or a magic potion. If you’re struggling with anxiety, then getting a new job or buying new shoes could be the right answer. It’s the first step. But that’s only the first step. The next step is to figure out why you’re feeling this way.

The important part is to realize that you are in control of your life.

This is the point at which we say that life is worth living. You are choosing to change the things that you believe are not good for you. You are choosing to change the behaviors that you think are important. You are choosing to take responsibility of your life. You are choosing to have a better understanding of your own habits and behaviors.

Your self-awareness is important, too. It’s not a matter of “should” but “should you.” You are not making decisions in a vacuum. You are making choices that affect everyone around you. You are not alone. You are not responsible for your own choices.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. If you want to stop feeling like you’re a victim of your own behavior, you have to stop looking in the mirror. Instead, ask yourself, “Am I doing this because I have to? Am I doing this because I feel like I need to?” This is the first step toward self-awareness.
