This is a picture of a ficus umbellata. These are our old-growth trees. The way they grow can be a bit tricky. In the past, we would just cut them back when they grew too large or became too large for the house. But in many regions, the trees naturally grow much taller and with thicker trunks. So, we are giving them a little help by adding a little mulch right onto the trunk.
It’s a little hard to know exactly how much mulch we need to add to the trees, but it can be just right. The trees have a slight tendency to grow very close to each other. So if we apply just a little mulch to the top of their trunks, they can grow much taller and thicker by growing together.
As a person who loves trees, I would have thought it was a great way to keep them smaller and lighter, but this seems like a great way to make them more interesting. The mulch can be left on the trunk until it dries, so it can add some nice texture to the trunk. And for the trees, it seems like a pretty good idea to add some extra mulch to their roots, so they will actually grow toward the mulch.
I’m always excited to see how nature can be integrated into our daily lives, and ficus umbellata seems to be a great way to do that. It is a great way to add texture to a tree and make it look more interesting. It’s also a great way to try out a new mulch method too.
