I’ve become a bit of a contrarian when it comes to smoking. Back in the day, I was a staunch anti-smoker. I had always been a smoker and loved it, but there was also something about the smell. It was a little bit like I was on a boat and my boat was being docked in a port. It was a scent of cigarettes. I knew I wasn’t a bad person for smoking so I tried to quit.
It wasn’t until I got pregnant that I realized how awful smoking was. When you have a child and the smoke makes you ill, you know what I mean. I had stopped smoking cold turkey just before my due date (I was 28 weeks), but I was still on birth control and was feeling the effects on my body. Just before my due date, I started to feel ill. One of my legs started to swell, so I took my other leg off and it got worse.
It’s the same effect as giving birth… but it’s the only way to get rid of the nicotine. You are literally killing the baby by taking away its breathing ability. As a result of smoking, you are also reducing the amount of oxygen your body has to process, which, in turn, makes your uterus feel heavier.
I have some advice for those who want to smoke while on birth control. Just like smoking, not having sex on birth control is also killing the baby. As long as you have a partner who is also on birth control, you should definitely be able to smoke while on birth control. However, this isn’t an absolute statement.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten pregnant and ended up smoking while I was trying so I can’t say whether or not I’ve smoked while on birth control. I do know that if I were to tell you that my husband smoked or that I was on birth control at the same time, I would certainly be worried.
I hope you get the idea. If youre pregnant and taking birth control, it should be absolutely fine to smoke on your own. That being said, it probably won’t be a good idea since the fumes will probably make you nauseous. A guy I know that goes through a series of hormonal changes, is allergic to cigarettes, and is on birth control, recently found out that if he used a lighter while smoking, he was going to be a complete non-smoker.
He’s not allergic to cigarettes, but he’s allergic to a certain kind of tobacco specifically, so he switched to a lighter after it became apparent that he couldn’t get a cigarette. I think the idea of having to switch to a lighter is a bit of a no-no, especially since the light is what makes the smoke not taste bad.
If you smoke tobacco on your own and choose not to switch to a lighter, your lungs will get blocked and you may not have as much of a lung capacity to smoke as you think.
That is a very valid concern. Because many people are allergic to some types of tobacco and because some people have a reduced lung capacity, having to switch to a lighter can cause health problems.
Although there is no one-size-fits-all solution, switching to a lighter for one cigarette when you are using birth control pills should be a no-brainer. At the very least, the lighter will help you keep the nicotine levels in your bloodstream down, and for some people, it’s even more important.
