This is a very important concept to understand. When we are in control of our decisions, we are able to make decisions that we are truly empowered to make. Autonomy means to be able to make decisions for our own best interests, or to our own personal growth. Self-awareness is the ability to know what you know, and what is true for you.
Autonomy is a fairly rare quality in our society. Many of us are still dependent on others to do what we want to do, or to do things that we are unable to accomplish by ourselves. We often look for guidance and accountability, but not autonomy. Autonomy is the ability to make good decisions that are in your best interests, or your own personal growth.
For many people, it’s not enough to know that they cannot control or even choose to do something without being accountable for it. Many people also have the illusion that they are able to control their own behavior and actions. They may think that they don’t have free will, or that they are somehow obligated to behave in a certain way, or that they are somehow responsible for their own actions.
In reality, the brain is a complex and sophisticated organ, the most advanced part of the human body at this point. It’s full of neurons, each with a unique purpose, that are tasked with doing a variety of tasks that include learning, thinking, and making decisions. In the brain’s most basic form, neurons are connected to one another, creating long strings of nerves that communicate with each other, which means these strings are capable of both transmitting impulses and receiving information.
Autonomy is the ability for our brain to process information and take action autonomously, without the need for our brain to be in control. For example, if we take a walk in our neighborhood, we are still taking the decisions of how to move ourselves through our environment (we can turn around, we can stop, we can cross the street, etc) in our own brain.
But if we aren’t in control of these impulses, they won’t necessarily make sense to us. And that’s what autonomy is about. Autonomy is about being in control, not controlling. The fact that the protagonist in The Last of Us (save for one brief moment) had complete control over his actions, but his choices didn’t make any sense, doesn’t mean that he didn’t have autonomy.
Autonomy is much like human agency. It’s the ability to engage in self-reflection and self-direction, and the ability to make sense of your decisions. Autonomy is the most basic, most basic form of self-awareness, but it’s often overlooked.
Autonomy is another word for self-aware self-control. Autonomy in the form of self-regulation is the ability to direct one’s behavior to what one wants to do, and not what some external force tells you to do.
Autonomy is a word that has multiple meanings, but the one I’m most familiar with is “self-regulation.” Self-regulation is the ability to direct one’s own behavior by analyzing the reasons behind one’s actions. It is usually contrasted with the ability to “learn” or “learn to act like” an overbearing authority figure (who often has no reason to tell you to act a certain way).
Autonomy can be a good thing. It is a virtue that encourages you to take a more informed view of your own behavior, to be able to make good decisions based on your values and to act accordingly. It is also a challenge to be able to make good decisions based on the advice of others, for instance, because one’s autonomy is based on your social status, which is often tied to being wealthy or powerful.
